Crystal clear waters and palm trees in Negril, Jamaica

Plan Your Trip to Negril

Everything you need to know before you go — when to visit, how to get there, and what to expect.

Best Time to Visit

Peak Season (December - April)

The most popular time to visit Negril. Warm, dry weather with temperatures around 80-85°F. Expect the highest prices and busiest beaches. Book accommodation well in advance, especially over Christmas, New Year's, and spring break.

Shoulder Season (May - June, November)

The sweet spot for value. Weather is still excellent, prices drop significantly, and crowds thin out. May and June offer some of the best beach conditions of the year. November is the tail end of hurricane season but rarely sees storms.

Summer & Hurricane Season (July - October)

The lowest prices and emptiest beaches. Temperatures are higher and afternoon rain showers are common but typically brief. The risk of tropical storms is real but statistically low for any given week. Lobster season starts in July, making this peak time for seafood lovers.

Getting to Negril

By Air

Fly into Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, Jamaica's main tourist airport with direct flights from most major US, Canadian, and European cities. From MBJ, Negril is approximately 90 minutes by road along the scenic coastal highway.

Airport Transfers

Both Skylark Negril and Rockhouse Hotel offer private airport transfer services. This is the most comfortable option — your driver meets you at arrivals and takes you directly to the property. Shared shuttle services and taxis are also available at the airport.

Getting Around Negril

Negril is small enough to get around easily. Taxis and route taxis run along the main road. Many hotels offer complimentary shuttle service between the beach and West End. For day trips, hire a driver or join an organized excursion.

How Long to Stay

3-5 Days: Beach & Relax

Enough time to enjoy Seven Mile Beach, explore the West End cliffs, visit a spa, and have a few great dinners. This is ideal for a focused beach vacation.

7+ Days: Explore Jamaica

A week or more lets you go deeper. Add day trips to waterfalls like Mayfield Falls and YS Falls, explore the Blue Hole Mineral Spring, take a cooking class, and split time between the beach and the cliffs. You'll leave feeling like you truly know Negril.

What to Pack

Essentials

Reef-safe sunscreen (required by many beaches), lightweight clothing, swimwear, a good hat, and comfortable walking sandals. Bug spray for evenings. A light rain jacket for shoulder/summer months.

Nice to Have

Snorkel gear (rentals are available but bring your own for the best fit), a waterproof phone case, a reusable water bottle, and one outfit for nicer dinners at resort restaurants.

Money & Tipping

Currency

Jamaica's currency is the Jamaican Dollar (JMD), but US dollars are widely accepted in Negril's tourist areas. Most restaurants, hotels, and activity providers quote prices in USD. ATMs are available in town.

Tipping

Tipping is expected and appreciated. 10-15% at restaurants (check if gratuity is already included), $1-2 USD per bag for porters, $5-10 per day for housekeeping, and 15-20% for spa services. Tour guides and drivers typically receive $5-10 USD.
